Another project in ZW Nowa has been put into operation.
Construction of the first Top Recovery Turbine Installation in Poland is in progress in Generation Plant Nowa. The installation will use energy generated as a result of blast furnace gas expansion to generate electricity for ArcelorMittal Poland Unit in Dąbrowa Górnicza.
A significant volume of high pressure blast furnace gas (200-220 kPa) is generated in blast furnaces during hot metal production. Finally, bf gas is burnt among others in boilers of the heat and power plant, however this process requires reduction of bf gas pressure to 15kPa. Once the investment is completed, the expansion process will take place in the turbines (connected with generators). Two independent turbo sets are planned for the two blast furnaces in operation. The nominal power of the installation will be almost 25MW.
The investment makes it necessary to connect the new installation to bf gas pipelines. All works require high precision and must be performed in a gas-hazardous environment in line with an established time schedule - which makes them one of the biggest challenges for the Contractor, Investor and AcelorMittal Poland S.A., the main stakeholder.
TRT installation will generate clean energy – this technology does not involve combustion, there is no emission of nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide or dust. Emission equivalent for this volume of energy generated in a power plant running on hard coal is approx. 180 tons of SO2 and NOx and 10 tons of dust per year. For comparison a traditional power plant would have to burn 54 000 tons i.e. 900 wagons of coal, to generate a similar volume of electric energy. This solution will help to avoid CO2 emission of 112 900 Mg.
Works conducted by the Contractor, Investor and ArcelorMittal Poland S.A. are in line with high H&S and quality standards. The project is also supported by the City Office of Dąbrowa Górnicza which follows an environmentally-friendly policy and supports all initiatives aimed at improving air quality in the region.
